Nick
Leary

Nick Leary authors visual narratives that move people through authentic emotion. He doesn't explain — he shows. Cinematic, deeply felt, distinctly Australian. Work that moves between art and commerce with the same uncompromising eye.

The Practice

It began with
a photograph.

What began as image-making evolved into a practice that spans brand creative direction, film, publishing, spatial design, and fine art. The eye has never changed. A Paspaley campaign does not need a caption. A Hamilton Island film does not need a voiceover. The image does the work.

Fine art and publishing remain the root system — not side work. They are what keeps the commercial practice honest.

"Anyone can generate an image now. The question is who's behind it."

AI has split the market. Brands without a defined visual language will drift. Brands who know what they want need someone who can define that language with enough authority that it governs everything — the AI output, the campaign, the spatial environment, the book. That cannot be generated. It requires twenty years of knowing what a frame should feel like before it is made.

Selected Work

Campaigns, films,
and brand worlds.

A cross-section of the practice: luxury storytelling, Australian identity, spatial narrative, and full-service creative direction from concept through execution.

Fine Art

The Australian
landscape, felt.

The fine art practice is not a side note. It is the emotional core — through projects such as Brumby, exploring freedom, identity, and the untamed romance of the Australian landscape. This is where the brief falls away and only instinct remains.

"The strongest work does not illustrate a feeling. It carries one."

No committee. No campaign cycle. Just years of looking at this country closely enough to know when an image is alive.

Practice

Image.
Art. World.

Three distinct channels — each building on the last. Brand creative direction makes the image. Fine art gives it authority. Ochre Weld Studio puts it in the room — from a single brand activation through to something that has never been made before.

I

Brand Creative Direction

The primary channel. Campaigns, films, photography, editorial, and complete brand worlds authored from concept through execution. Nick Leary is not a photographer for hire — he authors a brand's visual voice. The goal is depth on the right briefs, not volume. This is where most clients begin, and where the commercial work funds everything else.

II

Fine Art & Publishing

The moat. Independent works, limited editions, artist books, and long-horizon cultural projects made without a brief, without an approval process, without a campaign cycle. This is what gives the commercial practice its authority — and what makes it irreplaceable. Without a visible art practice, Nick Leary is a commercial director. With it, he is an artist who also directs.

Ochre Weld Studio

Where image becomes environment. Brand activations, spatial experiences, installations, and built worlds — from intimate brand moments to large-scale cultural propositions. The same authored eye applied to three dimensions, at every scale. A joint venture for clients who want something that has never been made before.
